PERSONAL PROJECT "ABOUT"

Instagram tourism has significantly transformed Étretat. For over 20 years, it has been one of my favorite places, but the massive influx of tourists, especially due to attractions like "The Panda's Eye," has put considerable strain on the infrastructure and environment. Étretat, a town of 1,300 residents, receives over a million tourists annually, which negatively impacts the quality of life for local inhabitants.
To counter this, Shaï and her partner Cosmo founded the association "Étretat Demain" (Étretat Tomorrow). They advocate for sustainable tourism and environmental protection by collaborating with politicians, business owners, and residents to develop practical solutions. Their initiatives highlight the necessity of shaping tourism in harmony with nature and the needs of the local population. 

What concrete measures has Étretat Demain taken so far to combat the negative effects of overtourism?
Shaï :
In addition to organizing litter clean-ups as often as possible, our work primarily consists of alerting visitors to the fragility of the site through the media and social networks (as they are one of the main causes of overcrowding on our cliffs). In this regard, we try to direct flows in a logic of geographical and temporal spread of visitation. Finally, we participate in "lobbying" actions to try to influence legislative activity on certain subjects (housing, environment, local authorities).


What originally inspired you to found Étretat Demain, and what personal experiences motivated you to do so?
Shaï :
I got involved in community organizations very early on because I noticed that our natural site was deteriorating at an alarming rate. As a result, I was elected President of the Association for the Defense of the Étretat Site at the age of 23. Subsequently, partly linking these degradations to the phenomenon of overtourism, we decided to merge our associations with a friend (Zéro Mégot Etretat) to create Etretat Demain: a non-profit association that fights against the environmental consequences of overtourism.


How have the residents of Étretat reacted to Étretat Demain's initiatives, and how has their quality of life changed since the association was created?
Shaï :
Most residents have given us real support in our actions. We try to act as spokespersons for them. We all have an interest in preserving our living environment. Without this union, what will become of our cliffs, our nature, our school, our local shops?


What challenges do you face in collaborating with local politicians, merchants, and residents to develop sustainable solutions for tourism?
Shaï :
Dialogue with local politicians is often difficult. It seems to me that our disagreements are often linked to ego problems. As for merchants, some of them have a long-term economic and environmental thinking logic and therefore understand or even support our actions. On the other hand, those who have seasonal activities and live exclusively from customer traffic are not our greatest allies. However, we believe that dialogue should not be broken.


What are the long-term goals of Étretat Demain, and how do you see the future of sustainable tourism in Étretat in the next ten years?
Shaï :
Given the particularly unstable French political situation at the moment, it is obviously difficult to project on the progress of addressing environmental issues. Nevertheless, we will continue our efforts so that Étretat can one day become the French model of sustainable tourism. I hope that we will be able to keep our nature and village life as intact as possible and that our children will also be able to peacefully enjoy this paradise in which we were lucky enough to grow up.
